Award-winning children's television producer and screenwriter Chris Nee, best known for her work on beloved shows such as Doc McStuffins and Vampirina, has revealed a lineup of exciting new animated preschool series set to debut on Netflix. Nee, who has earned prestigious accolades including the Peabody, Emmy, and Humanitas Prize, made the announcement under her overall deal with the streaming giant.
Nee expressed her enthusiasm for the projects, noting that one of the key reasons she chose to partner with Netflix was the platform's support not only for her own creative vision but also for elevating diverse and underrepresented voices in children's entertainment. Through her production company, Laughing Wild, she aims to reshape the landscape of children's content by championing creators from a wide range of backgrounds.
Netflix's Vice President of Original Animation, Melissa Cobb, praised Nee and her team as pioneers in children's television, highlighting their dedication to building imaginative worlds and bringing diverse characters to the screen.
The first title in the slate is Ridley Jones, an action-adventure preschool series created and executive produced by Nee herself, with music by composers Chris Dimond and Michael Kooman, and produced by Brown Bag Films. The show centers on six-year-old Ridley, who lives in a museum alongside her mother and grandmother and serves as its protector. Each night, the museum's exhibits — from stampeding elephants to Egyptian mummies — spring to life, and Ridley must navigate these adventures while learning the importance of empathy, leadership, and finding common ground with those different from herself.
Another standout project in the lineup is Spirit Rangers, a fantasy-adventure series created by Karissa Valencia, a member of the Chumash tribe and a writer who previously worked on Vampirina. Produced by Superprod Animation and executive produced by both Valencia and Nee, the series follows three Native American siblings — Kodiak, Summer, and Eddy Skycedar — who can transform into animal spirits to protect their national park home. Developed with the blessing of the Chumash and Cowlitz tribes, the show features a fully Indigenous creative team, including writers, artists, actors, and composers. Valencia shared that her journey from coordinator to showrunner was shaped significantly by Nee's mentorship, and she expressed deep pride in being able to tell her own story through this project.
Also announced is Dino Daycare, created and executive produced by Jeff King, another Vampirina alumnus, with Nee serving as executive producer. Set in a world where dinosaurs never became extinct and coexist with humans, the series follows a six-year-old boy named Cole who helps run a nursery for baby dinosaurs of all kinds. The show champions emotional intelligence and kindness as forms of strength, aiming to offer a fresh perspective on what it means to be a boy and, ultimately, a caring individual.
Rounding out the slate is the previously announced Ada Twist, Scientist, developed for television and executive produced by Nee, with Kerri Grant — a Peabody and Humanitas Prize winner and Emmy nominee — serving as showrunner and co-executive producer. Based on the beloved book series by author Andrea Beaty and illustrator David Roberts, the show follows eight-year-old Ada Twist, a fiercely curious young scientist who, with her two best friends Rosie Revere and Iggy Peck, unravels mysteries and applies scientific thinking to make the world a better place. The series is produced by Brown Bag Films and features series consultants including Dr. Knatokie Ford, a former senior policy advisor at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
