The defensive coordinator was the first candidate interviewed by San Francisco after parting ways with 16 days ago. Fangio has led monster defenses the last four seasons, ranking in the top five in the NFL in each year under the coordinator. There was some thought that if the hired an offensive-minded coach they'd want to retain Fangio and his staff. It turns out he might not be so amicable to an arranged marriage. Of course, Fangio currently remains under contract with the , but after going through a tumultuous coaching controversy last season, San Francisco surely wouldn't start a new coach's tenure by forcing a po sibly disgruntled coordinator on him -- especially if it were a first-time coach like Gase -- right?
