In January 2021, following the recent overhaul of the Netflix ISP Speed Index, we observed notable shifts in how various internet service providers (ISPs) performed in delivering prime-time Netflix streaming across 18 different countries and regions.
This update marked a significant change, as our new methodology allows for ISPs to be grouped within the same performance tier, which is a first in this ranking. The countries recognized for their top-tier performance this month include Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong, Iceland, Israel, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Romania, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States, all achieving a speed of 3.6 megabits per second (Mbps).
Among the ISPs, five made impressive strides, each increasing their performance by 0.2 Mbps. In Kuwait, Bonline improved from 2.6 Mbps to 2.8 Mbps. In Latin America, Etapa DSL/WiMax in Ecuador and Tigo Star in Guatemala reached speeds of 2 Mbps and 3.4 Mbps, respectively. Meanwhile, in Hungary and Austria, Telekom saw growth to 3.2 Mbps and A1 reached 2.4 Mbps.
A1’s performance contributed to Austria's average internet speed rising from 2.8 Mbps to 3 Mbps, marking the most significant increase among all nations.
However, Hungary’s Invitel service witnessed a decline, dropping from 3.2 Mbps to 2.6 Mbps. In France, SFR and Free both faced reductions of 0.4 Mbps, settling at 2.6 Mbps and 2.8 Mbps, respectively, while in Colombia, Claro saw a decrease of 0.4 Mbps to reach 3 Mbps.
In Asia, several ISPs also reported declines; Indonesia’s XL Home and Japan’s Vectant both fell by 0.4 Mbps to 2.8 Mbps and 2 Mbps, respectively. Taiwan's TFN experienced the steepest drop, plummeting 0.8 Mbps from 3 Mbps to 2.2 Mbps. Additionally, other Taiwanese services like HiNet and Taiwan Broadband also saw minor dips.
These shifts led to Taiwan's country average decreasing by 0.4 Mbps, down to 3 Mbps from 3.4 Mbps.
The Netflix ISP Speed Index aims to reflect the quality of Netflix performance across different ISPs at peak usage times, and it does not encompass overall performance metrics for other types of data over those networks. Improved Netflix performance typically correlates with enhanced picture clarity, faster loading times, and reduced buffering. For users wishing to evaluate their internet speed, they can navigate to http://fast.com via any web browser, or they can download the Fast Speed Test app on iOS or Android devices.
