The final gap is less technical and more human-centered, but its operational impact is real. Drone swarming software that's difficult for operators to understand, monitor, and intervene with — even in supervisory roles — creates operational risk that capable autonomous behavior can't compensate for.

Human-swarm interaction design — how operators receive situational awareness of swarm state, how they issue high-level commands and adjustments, how they intervene when individual agents or swarm behaviors require correction — needs to be a first-class design concern in any drone swarming software program that will be operated by real humans in real missions.

The gaps described here aren't theoretical. They show up on real programs, cost real schedule and budget, and in operational contexts, they have consequences that matter.
