The Colorado Avalanche locked up captain Gabriel Landeskog for the long term, at seven years and $39 million -- and it's a good deal for the team. Landeskog, 20, will count $5.57 million against the salary cap starting in Howie Morenz Jersey 2014-15. The deal runs through 2020-21 and buys out three years of unrestricted free agency, which is key. By that time, the salary cap will likely have risen, and players as good as Landeskog will carry higher cap hits. It's a good piece of work by Joe Sakic, to a five-year, $30 million extension. The No. 2 pick overall in 2011, Landeskog won the Calder Trophy in 2011-12 (24 goals, 28 a sists). He had nine goals and seven a sists in 36 games last season. He also was thought highly enough of to be named captain at age 19. From the team release: "Gabe is and will continue to be a large part of the foundation of this hockey team for many years to come," Sakic said. "Signing our captain to a long-term extension demonstrates the commitment of [owners] Stan and Josh Kroenke to this franchise and to our fan base. In just two seasons, Gabe has already proven to be a great a set to our organization both on and off the ice. The fact that he has agreed to a long-term deal shows that he believes in this team, his teammates and the direction of this franchise moving forward."
