With the top two picks in the 2015 NHL Draft all but decided since, well, this time last year, it has taken a lot out of the debate that usually surrounds the first few selections. Wunderkind Connor McDavid and fellow superstar hopeful Jack Eichel have long been billed by scouts as the Ross Colton Jersey surest bets an 18-year-old prospect can be. But what does the rest of the field look like? There's a ton of uncertainly beyond Nos. 1 and 2, which should make for a special display June 26-27 at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Fla., home of the Florida Panthers. MORE: | | Here's a breakdown of the top North American skaters and goaltenders that will be ripe for the picking: (Order based on NHL Central Scouting rankings; includes European players on North American teams) North American skaters 1. Connor McDavid, C, Erie (OHL) Vitals: 6-0, 195 pounds, 18 years old What they're saying: "Regarded as the top draft prospect since Sidney Crosby, has game-changing potential. He was third in the Ontario Hockey League in the regular season with 120 points despite playing 47 games. Hes been even better in the OHL playoffs; he had 11 points in a four-game sweep of London and leads all players in goals and points." 2014-15 stats: 44 goals, 76 a sists, 120 points in 47 games played Projection: First overall MORE: 2. Jack Eichel, C, Boston University (NCAA) Vitals: 6-2, 203 pounds, 18 years old What they're saying: "The best player in college hockey, Eichel has the skill to jump right into an NHL lineup. He led all college players with 71 points, and his NCAA-best 1.77 point-per-game average was the best by a freshman in more than 20 years. Has outstanding playmaking skills but also knows how to put the puck in net." 2014-15 stats: 26 goals, 45 a sists, 71 points in 40 games played Projection: Second overall MORE: 3. Noah Hanifin, D, Boston College (NCAA) Vitals: 6-2, 203 pounds, 18 years old What they're saying: "Noah Hanifin is a star in the making. A true two-way player that coaches want to leave on the ice as long as they have juice left. His game is reminiscent to that of the NHL player Drew Doughty: a truly versatile defenseman and a catalyst for positive happenings at both ends of the ice." 2014-15 stats: 5 goals, 18 a sists, 23 points in 37 games played Projection: Top five MORE: 4. Dylan Strome, C, Erie (OHL) Vitals: 6-3, 185 pounds, 18 years old What they're saying: "It's hard not to think of someone like Ryan Getzlaf when you watch Dylan Strome. His large frame, industrious work ethic, erratic shot and powerful skating ability are all characteristics shared with the Anaheim Ducks captain. While it remains to see if he ever reaches such a level, Dylan Strome certainly has the potential to be a cornerstone-type player." 2014-15 stats: 45 goals, 84 a sists, 129 points in 68 games played Projection: Top five 5. Lawson Crouse, LW, Kingston (OHL) Vitals: 6-4, 215 pounds, 17 years old What they're saying: "It isnt often you see a 6-4, 215-pound left winger with the skill that Lawson Crouse po se ses. He can play the game as a power forward, but also has nifty stickwork, patience and grit that make him a strong two-way player. Crouse makes a living playing in and around the net." 2014-15 stats: 29 goals, 22 a sists, 51 points in 56 games players Projection: Top 10 6. Mitchell Marner, C, London (OHL) Vitals: 5-11, 160 pounds, 18 years old What they're saying: "There is not another player in this years draft that brings the type of dynamic, game-breaking offensive ability to the table than Marner, unle s his name is Connor McDavid." 2014-15 stats: 44 goals, 82 a sists, 126 points in 63 games players Projection: Top 10 7. Ivan Provorov, D, Brandon (WHL) Vitals: 6-0, 201 pounds, 18 years old What they're saying: "Theres a lot to like about Provorov. Hes a big-bodied Ru sian with strong skating. Hes creative in the offensive zone and responsible in his own end, though he may jump into the rush too often." 2014-15 stats: 15 goals, 46 a sists, 61 points in 60 games players Projection: Top 10 8. Pavel Zacha, C, Sarnia (OHL) Vitals: 6-3, 210 pounds, 18 years old What they're saying: "Pavel Zacha is an offensively dynamic center with the size, speed and skill to make a significant impact on the game. He can play physical, but is at his best when using his high-end offensive abilities, such as his shot, stickhandling and footspeed, to generate numbers in the opposition's end of the ice." 2014-15 stats: 16 goals, 18 a sists, 34 points in 37 games played Projection: Top 10 9. Zachary Werenski, D, Michigan (NCAA) Vitals: 6-2, 206 pounds, 17 years old What they're saying: "Werenski is a prototypical two-way defenseman that can rush the puck up the ice, but also shut down the opposition's best lines in the defensive zone. He could stand to gain a few more pounds, but overall he has the size NHL teams will be looking for on the backend." 2014-15 stats: 9 goals, 16 a sists, 25 points in 35 games played Projection: Top 10 10. Timo Meier, RW, Halifax (QMJHL) Vitals: 6-1, 209 pounds, 18 years old What they're saying: "Can play center or right wing and is strong with and without the puck. He has high-end hockey sense, competes hard and is effective in 1-on-1 situations. Led Halifax in the regular season with 44 goals, and with 23 power-play goals." 2014-15 stats: 44 goals, 46 a sists, 90 points in 61 games played Projection: Mid-first round 11. Mathew Barzal, C, Seattle (WHL) Vitals: 5-11, 175 pounds, 18 years old What they're saying: "Mathew Barzal is an offensive forward with very good skating abilities. Has tremendous puck-handling and is poised with the puck, while looking for the perfect pa s-option using his strong vision. Owns an excellent wrist shot with a remarkable release." 2014-15 stats: 12 goals, 45 a sists, 57 points in 44 games played Projection: Mid-first round 12. Jakub Zboril, D, Saint John (QMJHL) Vitals: 6-0, 184 pounds, 18 years old What they're saying: "Could end up being that home-run pick in the 2015 NHL Draft. Few holes in his game. A low-risk, high-reward type of player. Reminiscent style of play to that of NHL D-man Keith Yandle." 2014-15 stats: 13 goals, 20 a sists, 33 points in 44 games played Projection: Mid-first round 13. Kyle Connor, LW, Youngstown (USHL) Vitals: 6-1, 177 pounds, 18 years old What they're saying: "A dynamic two-way player with speed and creativity to burn. Consistently displays elite-level skating ability, and an astonishing top speed. Sees the ice very well and is constantly looking to either score or make a player; the confidence he has in his abilities lets him do things with the puck that other players wouldn't even try." 2014-15 stats: 34 goals 46 a sists, 80 points in 56 games played Projection: Mid-first round 14. Travis Konecny, C, Ottawa (OHL) Vitals: 5-9, 177 pounds, 18 years old What they're saying: Quick and spirited scoring forward, Konecny projects as a top-six sniper who can play anywhere in the top nine. Despite being undersized, he plays with good physicality and wont back down from highly contested areas. Konecnys playing style resembles a player like Phil Ke sel in the way that he can unleash a shot in mid-stride. 2014-15 stats: 29 goals, 39 a sists, 68 points in 60 games played Projection: Mid-first round 15. Jansen Harkins, C, Prince George (WHL) Vitals: 6-1, 182 pounds, 18 years old What they're saying: "A blue collar-type two-way center. Thomas Chabot, D, Saint John (QMJHL) Vitals: 6-1, 180 pounds, 18 years old What they're saying: "A quick-thinking two-way defenseman that is able to make fast decisions and help his team whenever he is on the ice. Po se ses excellent mobility and has good individual puck skills; can catch the opposition off guard with his speed." 2014-15 stats: 12 goals, 29 a sists, 41 points in 66 games played Projection: Late first round 17. Evgeny Svechnikov, LW, Cape Breton (QMJHL) Vitals: 6-1, 199 pounds, 18 years old What they're saying: "Incredibly skilled offensive winger. Has a remarkably accurate shot to go along with some magic hands. Could be better defensively, but his game is based around his acute sense of what is happening on the ice in the offensive zone. All in all, a deadly player who po se ses good size, elite-level skill, and smooth skating." 2014-15 stats: 32 goals, 46 a sists, 78 points in 55 games played Projection: Late first round 18. Filip Chlapik, C, Charlottetown (QMJHL) Vitals: 6-1, 196 pounds, 18 years old What they're saying: "Chlapik already has good size for a player with his skill set, which helps him play well along the boards and in the corners. His vision and knowledge of the game are among his most praised attributes by scouts and observers. The main downside is his skating." 2014-15 stats: 33 goals, 42 a sists, 75 points in 64 games played Projection: Early second round 19. Jake DeBrusk, LW, Swift Current (WHL) Vitals: 5-11, 174 pounds, 18 years old What they're saying: "Jake Debrusk is strong on the puck and has excellent balance on his skates. As a result hes able to work the cycle game effectively, protecting and controlling the puck down low, fighting through checks and winning battles along the boards. He is also very good at fighting for space and establishing position in front of the net." 2014-15 stats: 42 goals, 39 a sists, 81 points in 72 games played Projection: Early second round 20. Daniel Sprong, RW, Charlottetown (QMJHL) Vitals: 6-0, 180 pounds, 18 years old What they're saying: "A prolific scoring winger who po se ses an elite-level skill set: has dynamic skating ability, is a creative pa ser and has incredible puck handling ability. While he is offensively dominant, he is also defensively responsible. A very hard-working player who strives to improve all aspects of his game. Absolutely electric." 2014-15 stats: 39 goals, 49 a sists, 88 points in 68 games played Projection: Late first round 21. Jeremy Roy, D, Sherbrooke (QMJHL) Vitals: 6-0, 188 pounds, 18 years old What they're saying: "Elite skating defender who is compact-sized but whose offensive prowe s and skating burst are giant-sized. An aggre sive attacker who also uses his acceleration, powerful leg drive, and stick to get back in position after the puck goes back in transition. He plays fairly physical and handles attackers and the front and has decent gap control and stays with attackers." 2014-15 stats: 5 goals, 38 a sists, 43 points in 46 games Projection: Mid-first round 22. Noah Juulsen, D, Everett (WHL) Vitals: 6-1, 174 pounds, 18 years old What they're saying: "A solid two-way defender, Noah Juulsen is able to force plays and always find ways to support his teammates. Juulsen is a smooth, yet not dynamic skater, and is mobile when he needs to be. Plays with a chip on his shoulder, and isn't afraid to take the hit to make the play. Sees the ice well and has the individual skills to carry out the po sibilities he sees." 2014-15 stats: 9 goals, 43 a sists, 52 points in 68 games played Projection: Late first round 23. Nicholas Merkley, RW, Kelowna (WHL) Vitals: 5-10, 191 pounds, 18 years old What they're saying: "In the mold of a true playmaker, Nick Merkleys vision, anticipation and imaginative pa sing abilities are in the top echelon of the draft. Kelownas top scoring forward is a very good skater with elusive puck skills and hes shown to be one of the WHLs most consistent producers. Ble sed with a fantastic motor and relentle s work ethic, Merkley has the ability to push the pace of the game and force turnovers on the attack." 2014-15 stats: 20 goals, 70 a sists, 90 points in 72 games played Projection: Mid-first round 24. Ryan Pilon, D, Brandon (WHL) Vitals: 6-2, 206 pounds, 18 years old What they're saying: "A strong two-way defenseman with the work ethic, determination, and skill to get the job done in all situations. He exhibits very good decision making in all three zones." 2014-15 stats: 11 goals, 41 a sists and 52 points in 68 games played Projection: Late first round 25. Brandon Carlo, D, Tri-City (WHL) Vitals: 6-5, 196 pounds, 18 years old What they're saying: "Brandon Carlo is an industrious, shift-by-shift defenseman who lets the game come to him rather than chasing the play; he is able to quickly adapt to the pace of the game on the fly. Through maneuvering his way around the ice and making high-percentage, skilled decisions in all three zones, he is able to shut opposition offense down before it begins to take shape." 2014-15 stats: 4 goals, 21 a sists, 25 points in 63 games played Projection: Early second round North American goalies 1. Mackenzie Blackwood, Barrie (OHL) Vitals: 6-4, 215 pounds What they're saying: "Mackenzies overall net coverage is excellent. His size and explosive leg power pushes are a great a set in his lateral ability. He is able to get acro s laterally with ease and very quickly, always being in control. Another advantage is when he drops in the butterfly he covers the lower corners post-to-post with his excellent leg extension while sealing the ice." 2014-15 stats: 3.09 goals-against average, .906 save percentage in 51 games played Projection: Late first round 2. Callum Booth, Quebec (QMJHL) Vitals: 6-2, 199 pounds, 18 years old What they're saying: "Callum is very composed and confident. He has great instincts and reads and reacts to plays very well." 2014-15 stats: 3.05 goals-against average, .900 save percentage in 41 games played Projection: Mid-second round 3. Samuel Montembeault, Blainville-Boisbriand (QMJHL) Vitals: 6-2, 173 pounds, 18 years old What they're saying: "Montembeault has the height that many NHL teams now value in a goaltender, and he makes good use of his butterfly style of goaltending in being able to cover both the lower portion of the net while also having the vertical size to cover a good portion of the upper half of the net." 2014-15 stats: 2.59 goals-against average, .891 save percentage in 52 games played Projection: Late second round 4.
